DEEP SPACE PLANET FUTURE GUN ACTION !!

in a far off time, in a place too distant to see, a song is sung for all of mankind

trigun is a space-western manga following vash the stampede, the infamous pacifist gunman with $$60 billion on his head, and all the different people he meets on his quest for love and peace. the manga began in 1995, and then had to change publishing houses in 1996. it returned in 1997 under the name trigun maximum, and ran until 2007

it was also adapted into a 26 episode anime series in 1998 by madhouse. the plot and pacing of the 1998 anime differ in a few places from the manga (which is only fair given the manga was about a quarter of the way through at that point lol), but it retains most of the original ideas of the manga. plus it gives meryl and milly a lot more screentime which is a huge bonus. i ♥ the insurance girls

but the summary that got me to look into trigun. comes from a miles-long tumblr post of all things. but "trigun is about if an atom bomb was actually a dude who felt bottomless grief all the time" is a pretty succinct way of putting it. just know its not exaggerating in the slightest

favorite anime episode: episode 23: paradise

trigun is one of those things that is such a massive encapsulation of things i like. its honestly absurd how i managed to not get into it sooner. and yet thats how these things go so often, isnt it? regardless. its got it all: fantastic visuals, tragedy, the loneliest people in the world, themes of free will and personhood, weird sci-fi, the list goes on. its even a western. it managed to work its way up to being one of my favorite stories of all time within just a few weeks.

it really did strike a very poignant nerve in me, the way it tells its story. it captures a lot of specific and grounded emotions/experiences, which contrast well against the fantastical sci-fi-western setting. i mean, the whole story is largely a spiralling domino-effect centered around vash and knives two different extreme responses to their experiences.

tldr; i love trigun. one of the most emotionally devastating stories ive witnessed. highly recommend it
